"mornings on 2" starts now. good morning. these are live pictures from almaden boulevard and san carlos streets in san jose. this is the scene of an accident involving a police car and another vehicle. you see those two cars right there at the center of your screen with some serious damage involved. we brought you this breaking news about 30 minutes ago. we'll have a live update from the scene, coming up. i'm tori campbell. >> i'm brian flores. dave is off today. let's get a quick look at weather and traffic. rosemary is in for steve. i hope people are bringing their jacket. it's cold. >> another chilly day in store. the big concern, this hour, the freeze warning. some of our coldest temperatures of the morning still holding on. we have 20s and 30s with that

freeze warning until 9:00 for the entire bay area with the exception of san francisco. low 20, fairfield, napa, 29 walnut creek, 29 in livermore. mid- to upper 30s at the bay to about 40 in san francisco. half moon bay, 32. received a tweet from pacifica, 33 there. and the heat is on as we get into the north bay, widespread 20s, hillsborough, calistoga, petaluma. you know the drill. bring along the winter coat, dress the little ones, bundle them up. we have another cool day in store. and then big changes coming our way. this system will bring us rain tonight and by tomorrow, snow to the local hills, definitely a possibility. upper 40s today, to low 50s. the rain moving in tonight. i have a lime tine for -- time line for you -- coming up. good morning sal. good morning. we have slow traffic in some of

these areas. we'll have a live report from almaden, the reporter is on the sceent. other things are going on, including an earlier crash at the bay bridge toll plaza, westbound. it was there in one of the lanes. they had the paramedics show up. it's not causing a huge delay. there's already a delay at the toll plaza. it's not as bad as it would be on a wednesday. the traffic is moving along nicely. if you are driving in san jose, 101 is slow. 7:03. back to the desk. we begin with breaking news from san jose. it's where a san jose police car has been involved in a serious crash. and officers have shut down the busy intersection of almaden boulevard and west san carlos street. janine de la vega arrived on the scene just a few minutes ago. she joins us live. janine, what have you learned?

>> reporter: police are not tell -- are now telling us this intersection will be closed for an hour or two while they investigate. you can see that a police car has been involved in a crash, the northbound lanes of alma done are closed. the eastbound lanes of san carlos are closed for about a block area. what we're learning here is that at about 5:45, the police car was stopped and almaden at san carlos, when another car, a cadillac, was traveling at a high rate of speed and then crashed into the back of that police car. at some point, we're hearing that the driver of that car tried to get away and it was a security guard who was working nearby in this downtown area that was able to catch him, apprehend him and wait until other officers arrived. i asked a police sergeant why wasn't the actual driver of the police car that got hit able to do that and she said,ing you

know, he must -- she said, you know, he must have been in knock. we're unsure how bad his injuries are. he and the other driver were taken to the hospital. they are being treated for injuries. non-life-threatening. a little more information about the officer. we're told he's a 13-year veteran with the department. the driver, we're not sure why he was trying to get away from police. i asked if it was a stolen car. they didn't think so. the spokeswoman for the police department wasn't able to tell me that. but she wasn't sure. we'll definitely follow up on that. they are still investigating this and they are unsure if alcohol is gonna play a factor in the crash. we're live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you. happening now -- thousands of people are in the dark and in the cold in benicia because of a major power outage. ktvu's claudine wong joins us

live to tell us when some people could get the power back and the possible cause for the outage. claudine? >> reporter: good morning. we got an update from pg&e a couple of minutes ago, telling us all about 2300 folks have been restored. that means they have their power back on. this outage affected more than 4100 people including all of the folks here at the south hampton shopping center. and this is huckleberry's a restaurant. these are the regulars who come here every day for coffee. danielle, you usually open up for them. how long have you been waiting in this parking lot to see if you can open up? >> about 6:25. a little more than half an hour. >> reporter: this update i got from pg&e says maybe not until noon. what does that mean? >> we probably won't be opening until noon or 1:00. >> reporter: what are you guys gonna do? you want coffee. >> right. >> i'm leaving. i'm getting coffee somewhere.

>> reporter: somewhere. will you come back here tomorrow? >> absolutely. >> reporter: when you drove up, you guys came with just wishful thinking and optimism -- >> my house was already off. >> reporter: you were in the dark? >> just before 3:00. >> reporter: you thought, i'll come down and get warm. >> i hoped so [laughter] >> reporter: and then -- >> i didn't realize the whole place was off. i can't have coffee at home. >> reporter: what are you gonna to? everyone patient out here? >> i'm patient. i live right up the hill. right up the hill and my power is on. >> sounds like plan b. >> reporter: plan b. it's a good crowd. they will be back tomorrow. at this point, they are thinking maybe an underground cable is responsible. there's the owner right now. he says this is a problem, obviously, when you talk about economics. 8:00 is usually the busiest time. not really what happening about what's happening now. there's nothing they can do but

wait. here's gonna check how this is gonna affect the middle school. we're hearing they might be without power as well e we'll give you -- as well. we'll give you an update. it was a watery mess overnight in mrsz after a water main break sent water rushing through a neighborhood. take a look at that. it all happened at 9:30 on martinez avenue near pacheco boulevard. crews say the cold weather and shifting ground caused the break. the water went into the garage of one home and rushed through two businesses. at one point disrupted business to 50 homes. service was restored for about two hours. it took all night to make the repairs. this is new video that we shot before 3:30 as crews were making the scene and patching the street. they also put sand down on a two-block stretch. all morning, rosemary has

been mentioning a freeze warning will expire across the bay area at 9:00 a.m. one of the coldest places, napa. overnight temperatures dipped in the 20s. while we hear, supposed pipes need -- exposed pipes need insulation during the winter, sprinklers are plumbing leaks. plumbers have been responding to calls due to frozen lines. >> you should listen for that noise of water flow. turn off all of the tv and noise. >> hardware stores are seeingage increase in insulation sales. the possibility of the snow has moved a pearl harbor ceremony off mt. diablo into concord. organizers say the conditions will make travel to the summit hazardous. the ceremony will now take place at the oak room at the library at cal state east bay in concord. the restored mountaintop beacon

will light up tomorrow night but insteaded of pearl harbor survivors flipping the switch, park rangers will get the cue. this was supposed to be the first year of the event since the beacon was restored. a winter blast is pounding a good part of the u.s. today. coming up in less than seven minutes, we'll go live to one of the hardest-hit areas today, dallas, texas. the chp is investigating a hit-and-run crash in the north bay that left a passenger crapped and injured. the accident happened on warm springs road near wolf run in santa rosa last night. the chp says the driver, 24- year-old john holly, was going too fast and could not make the turn. he crossed the other lanes of traffic, hit a tree and took off running. the chp says this girlfriend was left -- his girlfriend was left trapped in the car and was taken to the hospital and treated for her injuries. dianne feinstein is pushing to keep a deadline for

installing new technology on trains that she says would prevent crashes like the one in new york over the weekend that killed four people. senator feinstein introduced legislation back in 2008 that requires all trains to have what's called positive train control installed by december 31st, 2015. the technology automatically slows down or stops trains if engineers exexceed spi.es or are on a collision course with another train , seeds the speed limit or are -- exceed the speed limit or on a collision course with another train. we're learning more about the funeral plans for nelson mandela and why he will be buried far away from south

welcome back. south africa's government is preparing funeral ceremonies for nelson mandela who died yesterday at 95 years old. this is a live picture outside mandela's house in joe nan his burg. we're learn -- johannesburg. we're learning more about the funerals plans. there will be a ten-day mourning period. on day five, there will be a

service in johannesburg and his body will lie in state in a government building. he will be buried in a remote village where he grew up. president obama is expected to travel there for the service. well, nelson mandela certainly had strong ties to the bay area. nelson mandela has always said the movement by uc berkeley students back in 1986 calling on the university system to divest $2.5 million from the government was a crucial step in ending apartheid. nancy skinner, recalls the visit mandela paid to the bay area shortly after being released from prison in 1990. >> he came back to the east bay, to the oakland coliseum to thank the hundreds, thousands of people that had been there, americans in solidarity with south africa trying to get that regime done. an estimated 58,000 people

turned out to see mandela at the oakland coliseum that day. 7:15. the bay area is dealing with colder than normal temperatures, the central u.s. is in a deep freeze. in fact, there are weather alerts from michigan to illinois, even down to oklahoma and texas. our reporter is live in dallas where it's blanketed with snow this morning. kind of an unusual site for dallas. >> reporter: good morning, tori. this ice storm is hitting hard from here in texas all the way to tennessee. let me show you what people woke up to in dallas. look at this table and chair in the park. this is completely iced over. everything from the bushes to the branches. everything frozen in place. even worse, this isn't anticipated to clear up any time soon. this could last throughout the weekend. an arctic blast is bringing ice, snow and bitter cold to the center of the country. to the south, snow, sleet and

treacherous drive drive -- driving conditions. to the north, below zero temperatures. oklahoma and arkansas are under a state of emergency. >> if you don't have to get out, don't. >> reporter: that's the advice from texas. schools are closed in dallas and other cities and the list of cancellations at the airport is glowing. emergency officials in oklahoma say most of the roads are slick. >> go slowly, watch out for the person in front of you. make sure you are ready for the road conditions. >> reporter: the state has activated an emergency operations center to help people affected by the bad weather. at least three dozen people have been injured. in arkansas, the roads are blamed for a seven-car pileup. no one was seriously injured. on thursday, the stores were filled with people stocking up

a new study says eating healthy might actually be cheaper than you think. researchers at harvard university say eating healthy only costs about $1.50 for a day. that's about $550 more a year. researchers compared the price of fruits, vegetables and fish with the prices of processed foods, grains an meats. caltrain's holiday train making a return this weekend. want to go to new video of the train which is getting ready for the public debut tomorrow. the train is decorated with 60,000 lights and will stop at nine stations between san francisco and santa clara. the train begins the journey in san francisco at 4:00 on both tomorrow and sunday. awesome. >> yes. 7:19. want to check in with sal right now, see how things are moving on this friday morning. >> we're getting some wear and tear on some of the roads. that's for sure.

let's take a look at what we have with the morning commute on highway 4, it's better now than it was. one of the things that we've noticed is that the traffic is going to be a little bit slow as you drive through the construction zone in antioch and pittsburg but it looks good as you are driving through the baypoint area. that's not a bad commute. also looking at the drive at the bay bridge toll plaza, we had an earlier crash, blocking some of the lanes. it's a little bit heavier than normal for a friday. 20-minute delay. no problems. no problems on 24 getting through the caldecott tunnel. we still have the police activity here at the corner of almaden and san carlos. it's a good area to avoid. you might want to think about using other routes. our reporter ktvu's janine de la vega is there and she's finding out more information about that. let's go to rosemary. this morning, cold and dry. by tonight, cold and wet. i'm already beginning to see the subtle changes coming our

way. high clouds overhead, over parts of the east bay. the wind pattern beginning to shift a little bit. and let me introduce you to the storm that's going to bring us some rain, maybe snow to the local hills. sits off the coast of washington as we move through the afternoon today. increasing clouds coming our way. by tonight, the possibility of scattered showers. here we are at 3:00 this afternoon. notice the increase in clouds, already beginning to see the onset of these clouds. i'm seeing some along the coastline and stretched across the bay. we'll be partly cloudy for your friday. by the evening hours, perhaps even clipping the evening dry. this stops right about 7:00. scattered showers in the forecast as early as 7:00 this evening. the heaviest rain is expected to fall in the overnight hours. now we're wake dashing up tomorrow morning -- now we're waking up tomorrow morning. decent snow for the sierra, 1 to 2 feet above 7,000 feet. this is a cold system. snow down in the sierra

this morning police in vallejo are searching for the gunmen responsible for a deadly shooting. it happens yesterday afternoon near chelsey court. newschopper2 took this video of the crime scene. officers say when they arrived, they found a man shot. he was taken to the hospital where he later died. authorities identified the victim as 22-year-old emeal rodrigues. anyone with information is asked to contact vallejo police. scmas will come early for the san francisco police department. this morning, greg suhr will receive $20,000 from john's grill and santa claus. the money will be used for ten

automated external defibrilators in patrol cars and the tender loin stations. they hope to stock all 320 patrol cars with defibrilators. pacific is showing an outpouring of support for two little girls diagnosed with cancer. bella hung was diagnosed with leukemia the day before thanksgiving and then a few days later, annika johnson was diagnosed with a rare form of kidney cancer. both children are students at cabrillo elementary in pacific, just a grade apart. >> pacific is a very tight- knit, small community. for this to happen at the same school in the same week is perplexing. the community felt they needed to support any way they could. >> people in pacifica have set

car tried to get away but a good samaritan helped catch the person. who the good samaritan was and the new information we learned from police, all coming up in a live report. good morning. i'm tori campbell. >> good morning. i'm brian flores. dave clark has the morning off. let's get a quick look at weather and traffic. rosemary is in for steve. is it gonna get any warmer this weekend. we're looking at cold weather. we'll see temperatures moderate a little bit. it has to do with a system that will bring us rain, snow to some of the hills and then we'll turn cold. the freeze warning lasts until 9:00 for the entire bay area with the exception of san francisco and san francisco has remained about 40 degrees all morning. but some of us beating some old records. napa, 23 degrees currently. the old record stands at 29. san francisco, tying a record, perhaps even beating it because i saw san francisco dip to 39 briefly earlier this morning. oakland, 38 right now.

livermore upper 20s. it looks like you will hold your record set back in 2009, 26 degrees. san jose has managed to stay at about 34 degrees. but i was checking out the airport a little earlier this morning. we may have broken a record there. the national weather service will decide that later. this is the system that will be bringing us rain and perhaps some snow. definitely some snow to the sierra. but we may pick up a little bit whi tomorrow morning as well -- by tomorrow morning as well. by tonight, rain begins to fall. the heaviest rain 8:00 this evening and into the overnight hours. i see even a few scattered showers possible for the evening drive. i will have that time line for you. i will have a look at your afternoon highs coming up. good morning, sal. good morning, rosemary. we're looking at slow traffic around the bay area. we'll start with the toll plaza. westbound traffic is backed up for a 20-minute delay. maybe more than that. but nothing too much more severe. once you make it on the bridge, it looks good. we haven't had any reports of

black ice this morning, although just because we don't know about it doesn't mean it's not there. westbound 92 san mateo bridge as you head out to the high rise. the traffic is looking good. san jose, 85 is slow from 87 all the way up into saratoga. 880 southbound is slow from about a street down to just past dakota road as you head towards fremont and 580, the morning commute there is manageable. a little bit of slowing coming into livermore. marin county slows from south of 37 this morning to freitas parkway. back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. we're following some breaking news from the south bay. a san jose police car has been involved in a steer just crash -- steven just crash. officers have shut down almaden boulevard and west san carlos street. ktvu's janine de la vega arrived on the scene about 45 minutes ago. we've learned about a good samaritan that's been involved in this incident. >> reporter: good morning, brian. this is in the heart of

downtown san jose. i want to show you the car that crashed into that police vehicle. you can see it's right on top of that tow truck right there. this happened right here in this intersection at san carlos and almaden which is shut down. you can see there's still a lot of debris in the roadway, broken glass, some car parts. that's why officers are thinking that this will be shut down for at least another half- hour or so. let's go to some video a little bit earlier which shows this crash that happened at 5:45 this morning. the police car was there waiting in the northbound lanes of almaden when the cadillac crashed into the back of him at some point, the driver of that cadillac got out and tried to get away but it was a security guard from a nearby hotel that was able to catch him and apprehend him until other officers arrived at the scene. here is what a police sergeant told me about why the actual

police officer involved in the crash wasn't able to actually get out of the car. >> i don't really know why it is that the officer was not able to go after the driver. but, yes, it was a good gesture that the security guard did step in and helped us out to keep the driver here until we could arrive. >> reporter: both the police officer as well as the driver of that car were taken to the hospital. we're being told that that driver has been taken to the -- into custody and he will be arrested, possibly for hit and run. now, we know that the police officer suffered moderate injuries. they are non-life-threatening. both the injuries of the police officer as well as the driver of that cadillac. let me tell you as far as the -- if this is a stolen vehicle. right now, officers say they don't think it is. they are still trying to determine that. they do know that the person in the car was not the registered

owner. but they are still trying to contact who opens that car to figure out if it is actually stolen. now, they are not sure if alcohol was involved in this crash. again, it's still under investigation. but the northbound lanes of almaden for about a one-block area are closed as well as the eastbound lanes of san carlos. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 7:35. the cold weather here in the bay area is prompting a warning to drivers to be extra careful on the roads. the combination of freezing temperatures and precipitation predicted tonight and tomorrow morning could mean black ice and treacherous road conditions. yesterday, a broken water pipe on ignacio created the slick streets when the runoff froze. chp says black ice also forms early on the morning on cold roadways that are covered by shadows and it can occur on or around bridges. shelters in sonoma county

have idead extra -- have added extra beds to keep the homeless out of the shelter. many shelters have been fulled. the county provides 580 beds year-round but 100 extra beds wered added because of the cold. there are about 3300 homeless people in sonoma county. college students in the south bay had to battle the cold even after they made it inside their classrooms. west valley said pg&e told the school to cut the natural gascon sumtion by 25% so the ult could meet -- utility could meet high demand in the area. the temperatures were lowered to 68 degrees. administrators said certain areas could feel colder. the bad weather is prompting pg&e to staff extra crews. pg&e is concerned about a repeat of a snowstorm four years ago that left thousands of people in the placerville area without power for days. people are currently stocking

up at hardware stores buying everything from oil lamps to shovels. >> i've decided to test some new equipment i have for camping. i've set up the tents that i'm gonna sleep in the snow and make sure it works. >> law enforcement urging drivers to slow down and be cautious of icy roads and black ice. snow could drop to 1,000 feet by sunrise tomorrow. elevations above 2,000 feet could see 3 to 8 inches of snow. now, check frequently with ktvu.com for weather updates including alerts and warnings. there are forecasts for your neighborhood. we'll post all of the information on facebook and twitter. 7:38. it may soon cost more to ride b.a.r.t. during the morning and even rush hours. the b.a.r.t. board is looking into charging higher fares during the transit systems busiest hours when many commuters are heading to or from work or school. riders would pay more at b.a.r.t.'s busiest stations. the so-called peak-hour premium

plan is already used in other u.s. cities including washington, d.c. 7:38. a retired santa clara county superior court judge will lead a special task force to investigate the alleged hate crime at san jose state. cordle is also san jose's police independent aud eter. the president of san jose state says they will propose recommendations that the school is a safe, welcoming and tolerant community. police say four white students taunted their black roommate with racial slurs and put a u- shaped bicycle lock around his neck. they face hate crime and battery charges. the battle against the division rival seahawks and the 49ers is the most important game of the season so far. ktvu's tara moriarty is in san francisco with the buildup to this very big game.

county. a quake measuring 3.7 shook the community of angin at 10:22 last night. about 24 miles northeast of santa rosa. some people say they felt desks and chairs move but no major jolts. sniffles are concerned that the water off the sonoma coastline could be a dead zone for crab and fish. they say a lack of oxygen was detected in the water which may harm marin life. it's similar to a problem along the oregon coast in 2004. scientists think climate change may be to blame for the low oxygen levels in the water. california's high speed rail authority says the $68 million project is still on track. the state still plans to break ground on the first construction segment as early as next month. ahead of the high speed rail authority says the state will try again to get approval to sell bonds for the project in the near future. opponents say resent court

rulings on -- recent court rulings are serious setbacks, although supporters deny that. some parents are questioning how administrators responded to a scary incident on a san francisco high school campus earlier this week. the staff member at burton high found a loaded sawed-off shot gun with extra ammo in inside an unattended backpack. police later arrested a 16-year- old student who reportedly admitted bringing the gun to school, possibly for his own protection. we spoke to parents who are upset and disappointed over how the incident was handled. the time i had found out about it was this morning. no one told anybody about it. >> two days later, i get a voice mail. i'm driving. what! i'm just now hearing about it. do they realize what could have happened. >> police have interviewed the teen's parents to try to learn mere about the motive. school district administrators did not return our calls.

repairs. this is new video before 3:30 this morning as crews were leaving the scene after fixing the break and patching the break. they put sand down on a two- block stretch of pacheco boulevard because of the watering starting to ice over. as rosemary has been mentioning, a freeze warning will expire over the bay area in the next hour. one of the coldest places is napa where overnight temperatures dipped in the 20s. we're used to hearing about exposed pipes needing insulation during the winter. but even interior pipes protected by duct walls are springing leaks. plumbers are responding to emergency calls. >> as far as just a cold, it bites into you, thises with it. a very biting biting cold. >> hardware stores are seeing a run on insulation materials as people try to protect their properties from freeze and potential water damage. the threat of snow this

an oakland man said he was the victim of a so-called knockout game where an attacker tries to knockout a total stranger. he tells us the brutal attack happened while he was riding an a.c. transit bus near lake merritt wednesday night. these pictures show the cuts and bruises lindsey said he suffered after the man punched him several times. lipedz say said he was not -- lindsay said he was not robbed. just beaten. >> it was clear since he wanted nothing of mine, nothing that i own, you know, that maybe that -- that's what it felt like. it felt like i was trying to be knocked out. >> he said he was hit several times before the attacker ran away. the alameda county sheriff's department is investigating the case and are urging witnesses to step forward. this attack comes one month after sasha fleishman was set on fire on another a.c. transit bus. sasha is still recovering from serious burns to the legs but returned to school this week

south africa's government is preparing funeral ceremonies for nelson mandela who died yesterday at the age of 95. people have been gathering outside his home in johannesburg. we're learning more about the funeral plans for him. there will be a ten-day mourning period. on day 5, there will be a memorial service in a stadium in joe johannesburg and then his body will lie in state for three days in pretoria.

truck, grabbed a part and drove away. the part was found in the person's home. california senator dianne feinstein is pushing to keep a deadline for installing new technology on trains that she says would prevent crashes like the one in new york over the weekend that killed four people. senator feinstein introduced legislation back in 2008 that requires all trains to have what's called positive train control installed by december 31st, 2015. the technology automatically slows down or stops train if engineers exceed speed limits or are on a collision course with another train. the railroad industry has been lobbying to install this to 2015. it's been six days since a plane carrying a pilot and his family went missing. dale smith was flying from oregon to montana when he

good morning. let's take a look at the commute we've had improvement on this friday. i think people are feeling good. perhaps some people are not going to the office just yet or they are working from home because 280 in the valley, the traffic is improwferning quite a -- improving quite a bit. earlier this morning, we had a lot of slow traffic on the maps here on 580 through dublin and livermore and the traffic is moving well. there's still slow traffic on 880 southbound but it's starting in union city. it only lasts until fremont and then it breaks free. some slowing on the peninsula. it's not that deep but 101 at 92. at the bay bridge we're seeing traffic has really for all intents and purposes lightened up for the morning. 8:19. let's go to rosemary. tracking changes in morning. giving you a live look at the bay. golden gate there and in the backdrop clouds beginning to move in. this is just the beginning. eventually we'll see rain

8:24. homicide detectives in santa cruz have announced a big break in a cold case. they now know the name of the young victim nearly 20 years after the crime. detectives say dna evidence is identified her as 17-year-old corey joanne lamaster of pacifica. investigators say she was beaten to death. two hikers found her body, buried in a park near uc santa cruz in 1994. >> they are about 50 feet off a trail that's used there. when they discovered the body. >> homicide detectives are

still looking for the girl's killer. santa cruz police officer lauren butch baker was one of the first investigators assigned to this case. baker was one of the two santa cruz detectives killed in the line of duty earlier this year. a new study says eating healthy might be cheaper than you think. researchers at harvard university say eating healthy only costs -- about $1.50 more a day. there may be a big savings when it comes to improved health. researchers compared the prices of healthy foods like flutes, vegetables and -- fruits, vegetables and fish. caltrain's holiday train is making a return this weekend. want to go to new video of the train which is getting ready for the public debut tomorrow. the train is decorated with 60,000 lights and will stop at nine stations between san francisco and santa clara.

area weekend. good morning, sal. we're looking at improving conditions around the bay area. you can see that 80 is still crowded heading down toward the macarthur maze. when you try to get to the toll plaza, i think you are going to be happily surprised. there's a little bit of a packup. nothing much. once you make it on the span, it looks good. this morning we did not have widespread reports of black ice, unlike yesterday when we had a little bit of it here and there. this morning, we haven't heard of any. we're looking at the san mateo commute. 101 is better than it used to be. but in the south bay, we still have slowing on 280 northbound as you approach cupertino and 101 in mountain view. but it definitely is better than normal. back to the desk. developing news right now. a san jose police officer has been hurt in a hit-and-run crash. it happened a few hours ago at the intersection of almaden boulevard and west san carlos street. ktvu's janine de la vega just spoke to a good samaritan who

helped police arrest the suspect. >> reporter: it almaden and san carlos, this intersection is back open to traffic. it opened up in the last 45 minutes. police cleared up the crash scene. they are praising the security guard from the hilton who caught the civer involved in the -- driver involved in the crash. let's go to some video from earlier. this crash happened at 5:45 this morning. police say the officer was in the northbound lanes of almaden waiting at the light when a cadillac speeding crashed into the back of the patrol car. the driver tried to get away but the security guard was able to catch up with him and apprehend him. the manager from the hilton says that a second guard also helped while they waited for the officers to arrive. now, both the driver and the police officer were taken to the hospital with non-life- threatening injuries. we're told by police that that car was not stolen. they are not sure why he was trying to get away but he is in

custody and most likely will be arrested for hit and run. again, back out here live, we're trying to see, again, if the security guards will talk to us about this ordeal. we understand that at least one of them before the crash happened was actually talking to that police officer and we have witnessed the crash. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. it is 8:33. the cold weather here in the bay area is prompting a warning to drivers to be careful on the roadways. freezing temperatures and wet weather tonight could mean black ice and treacherous road conditions. yesterday, a broken water pipe at ignacio valley road created slick streets. the chp says black ice forms early in the morning on cold roadways covered by shadows and can also occur on or around bridges. shelters in sonoma county

have added extra beds. many shellers have been full for -- shelters have been full for the past few days. the county provides 580 beds yearround. but 100 extra beds were added this week because of the cold. there are about 3800 homeless people in sonoma county. in the sierra foothills, the weather is causing pg&e to staff extra crews starting today. pg&e is concerned about a repeat of a snowstorm four years ago that left thousands of people in the placerville area without power for days. people are currently stocking up at hardware stores buying everything from oil lamps to shovels. >> i have actually decided to test some new estimate i have for camping. i've set up my tents and i'm gonna sleep in the snow and make sure it works. >> law enforcement are urging drivers to slow down and be cautious of icy roads. elevations up to 2,000 feet could see 3 to 8 inches of

well, u.s. stock markets sharply higher this morning after four days of losses. right now the dow is up 150 closing back into the 16,000 mark. the nasdaq is up 28 and the s&p is up 16. now, a big reason for this jump, unemployment in the u.s. is at a five-year low. the labor department announced just a few hours ago that the unemployment rate in november dropped to 7% down from 7-point 3% in october -- 7.3% in

october. employers added 203,000 jobs, more than expected. the economy has generated 200,000 jobs from august through november and the strengthening job market is likely to fuel speculation that the federal reserve may scale back bond purchases when it meets later this month. 8:44. let's get you updated on some of the top stories we're following right now -- a san jose police officer has been hurt in a hit-and-run crash. it happened a few hours ago at the intersection of west san core lows street and south -- san carlos street and south almaden boulevard. the officer was stopped at a red light when a driver slammed into the back of his patrol car. the driver attempted to flee the scene but was stopped by a nearby security guard. both the police officer and suspect suffered moderate injuries. a water main break in martinez has been fixed. it all happened at about 9:30 last night on martinez avenue near pacheco boulevard. crews say the cold weather and

moving ground caused the break. thousands are still without power including a middle school in benicia. right now confused parents are wondering if the school will have to close for the day. ktvu's claudine wong joins us live in benicia with a look at what's happening right now. it's been quite a morning, as you tweeted out, claudine. >> reporter: it's been a very, very busy morning. benicia middle school, it's in session. looking behind me, you can't see any kids. that's because they are all in class. dark classes because there's still no power and still no word on when they are going to get power. but the principal told me they are going to try to have school as usual. take a look at some of the video we spoke for you as the kids were heading on into class. there was some confusion this morning because everyone was trying to figure out if they would have power today. really at the end of the day, they said, you know what? we're just gonna get the kids in class and have school as usual even though the power is not on. we talked to one student who said he's not worried about it.

alternate route. that would be to use 280 instead. 280 go all the way through daly city and go that way. i think it would be a much better option at this point, especially since most of the other traffic in the bay area is light. but this area right here is going to be a problem. two lanes are blocked. as you can see, the slow traffic already begins in san bruno. pretty soon it will be back to millbrae because of this south city crash. let's take a look now at westbound bay bridge. that's light. it has become much better in the last hour or so. if you are driving on 280 in san jose, usually we see more traffic but that's also become lighter. let's go to rosemary. we'll struggle again today with our temperatures, another bone-chilling start for the afternoon, upper 40s to low 50s. giving a live look into san francisco. did you see the cruise liner? that looks cool. anybody up for a cruise, you may change your mind when you find out what's on the way. not only cold weather but we have rain coming our way and the possibility of some snow. we're tracking the system off
